SIP Trunking – an often overlooked option for small businesses




When I started the company in 1998, the world of technology was a different place to what it is today. We techies who were used to chatter within the Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) when the more modern internet came of age in the 90s were already somewhat aware of where it was all going and were excited to watch it all unfold. Further, most of us in the VoIP telephony market certainly grabbed hold of the developments in the early to mid-2000s when VoIP services that used an existing connectivity (broadband) started bringing more awareness to VoIP; however,  even today many people outside of the industry simply still don’t know what it’s all about.

The telephony marketplace and connectivity landscape has transitioned to a faster, more efficient, and entirely agile industry. An article written earlier this year suggests that 41% of businesses use VoIP telephony to reduce costs and improve efficiencies.* That is a nice figure, but it’s not nearly as high as one might think considering how long both have been around. I won’t dwell on the topic for long here though, as today I’d like to briefly bring into view the often forgotten, but ever valuable option of SIP Trunking.

Businesses are really starting to recognise the importance of adopting clever and nimble technology to futureproof their organisations for the next decade. Embracing modernity is synonymous within all walks of the technology industry, and for telephony specifically – there is certainly still a huge future for SIP Trunking.

In a nutshell,  a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Trunk provides the same service you get from a traditional analog phone line. However, instead of a physical wire, a SIP Trunk is a virtual line provided by a SIP trunk supplier. The data circuit connects your phone system back to their network. In tech terms, it connects your PBX to the PSTN via broadband, Ethernet or private circuit into a network.

Since the 80s, as computer networking and digital audio has become more refined and easier to transfer,  VoIP and SIP Trunking suddently became smarter choices for businesses looking to control their time and more specifically, their costs with lower cost line rentals and call costs. It’s also quite easy to switch  as no new fixed lines are needed and companies can use existing broadband connections.

Efficiency in the workplace is something we all strive for, and I can say with the utmost confidence that SIP trunking enables your company to expand overnight. Companies are most likely experiening higher costs with their existing PBX through a combination of monthly phone bills  which include charges for incoming phone lines, long distance charges and IT and maintenance fees, all of which can be drastically reduced with a SIP Trunking solution.

Whether you are a small business just getting on its feet or are an already established company simply looking at the bottom line, SIP trunking allows you the freedom of a premium service at a fraction of the price.
