A recent BBC article stated that the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is concerned that the UK’s broadband is not fit for purpose, and the country’s broadband target is ‘simply not ambitious enough’ when you compare it against other nations.
The FSB is insistent that the government delivers a minimum of 10Mbps to every home and business by 2018/19, rising to 100Mbps by 2030, to bring the UK’s service in line with other countries.
However, when you consider Finland is planning countrywide speeds of 100Mbps by 2015, while South Korea wants to provide their population with 1Gbps connections by 2017, the UK’s plans don’t seem quite ambitious enough.
According to the report, the UK’s broadband service includes some unsettling statistics:
- 45,000 UK small businesses operate on dial-up speeds
- Only 15% of business owners are satisfied with their broadband service
When you take into account 94% of small businesses deem a reliable internet connection to be critical to their business’ success it’s clear that broadband services need to be improved.
One of the FSB’s recommendations is that fibre broadband delivery to new and existing business parks is prioritised throughout the UK – a task that shouldn’t be too unrealistic, considering 73% of UK premises can access fibre services, a statistic that should rise to 90% in the next two years.
The benefits of fibre broadband are huge, particularly for business owners, and the difference in service between fibre and ADSL is staggering.
Faster download speeds mean you can enjoy faster page load times and smooth streaming, as well as multiple users being able to browse at once. The main selling point of fibre broadband tends to be the download speeds but upload speeds are just as important for businesses: increased upload speeds makes a huge difference to customers who need to access data stored on your local servers.
Gradwell’s Superfast Fibre service ensures that your VoIP calls will run smoothly with crystal clear audio on a stable platform and allows multiple users in your office to make concurrent calls with ease.
