Following a successful trial at Charring Cross station, where passengers surveyed felt that access to WiFi made their experience of the Tube better, TfL are looking for telecoms companies to install further internet hotspots.
TfL hope to have chosen a winner by the end of this year. This will lead to passengers being able to use the internet and make calls on VoIP services while using the Underground, which is currently a connectivity blackspot, in time for the Olympics in late July.
The first phase of the project will open up services previously reserved for TfL staff to 16 stations before expanding to the full 120.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “The roll out of WiFi technology across the platforms and public areas of our Tube stations will finally allow Londoners to use mobile devices… while they traverse our subterranean transport network.
We are inviting companies to bid to do this before next June, which would mean that even Londoners going underground will be able to keep up to date with the British medal tally at the 2012 Games.”
However, the new installations will open up much more than just medal tables. Businesses operating in the heart of London will be able to access vital services on the move. While there will be a lack of telephone signal, mobile devices will still be able to make and receive important calls by using a business VoIP service through an app such as Fring. Combine VoIP with a Hosted Exchange email service, which syncs your email in the cloud, and you’ve got access to all your business communications!
