UK VoIP Industry
In the UK, ITSPs are regulated by Ofcom. Ofcom regulates the UK's broadcasting, telecommunications and wireless communications sectors. They also set and enforce rules on fair competition between companies in those industries1).
For companies like Gradwell, this involves complying with the General Conditions of Entitlement. These are the rules that all telephone service providers in the UK have to abide by. They replaced the previous regime of each telephone provider being separately licensed. The General Conditions came out of the UK Communications Act 2003.
Our trade body is the Internet Telefony Service Providers' Association, which Gradwell helped found in March 2004. ITSPA seeks to promote a strong and credible VoIP service industry within the UK, by representing us in dealings with Ofcom, and also by providing a Code of Practice and Complaints Procedure.
