Definition of "Relaying Denied" errors
Getting Started
You are probably reading this page because you received an error from our mail servers:
550 Relaying denied - please see http://support.gradwell.net/article.php?197
Basic Configuration
The main cause for this error is due to Incorrect settings in your email software , or your email software is not authenticating correctly with our email servers.
Advanced Configuration and Troubleshooting
Not authenticated.
If you are a Gradwell customer and wish to use our mail cluster for sending your outgoing mail, you must either use SMTP AUTH or use the so-called 'SMTP after POP3' relaying technique, where we allow an IP address to relay through our mail cluster for up to three hours after a successful login. SMTP AUTH is much more reliable since occasionally the 'SMTP after POP3' relaying list can get out of date, usually during periods of very high load.
Domain not configured.
If you are Gradwell customer and either you or one of your correspondents receives this error when sending mail to one of your Gradwell hosted domains, then it means that you have not correctly set up the domain in the control panel. You must set up the domain in one of Mail Forwarding, Secondary MX, or Secondary DNS, before we will accept mail for the domain.
Incorrect settings.
If you are not a gradwell customer, and you receive this error, then either you are incorrectly using our cluster as your smarthost, or you are sending to a Gradwell hosted domain in which case “Domain not Configured” above applies.
In the first case, you should correct the settings in your email program. In the second case, if possible, you may want to contact your correspondent by other means and inform them of their configuration problem.
