Getting StartedPlease note - Counterpath have released a newer version of X-Lite, full configuration details are here. This article is intended to help anyone still running the older version of the softphone. The configuration steps for each softphone are markedly different, therefore we recommend that if you are running X-Lite 4 you visit the newer support guide. A "softphone" is a piece of software that you download to your computer, which allows you to experience VoIP technology and experiment with set up and call quality. You will also need a headset and microphone, the Plantronics 400 is a great example, or you could use the speakers and microphone built into your laptop (although sound quality will not be as good). When you have downloaded the software, you must configure it before you can make or receive phonecalls - this is a fairly straightforward process and is described briefly below. Walkthrough videoTo help you set up X-Lite 3.0 you can watch our walkthrough video. You can pause and rewind as necessary, and use it along with the notes below.
Basic configurationAfter installation and on running the program it will display the following screen.
This image should be partially covered by the SIP Accounts window
Select the Add menu option. If the window above does not appear automatically then you already have a SIP account configured. You will need to right click on the phones screen and a popup window will appear:
Select SIP Account Settings, then click Add - you will now be ready to enter your new account details, your screen should be showing a window with a number of tabs, where we can enter the SIP account details.
Enter your name or telephone number in the Display Name field, this is used when calling other SIP Phones - you could display your name here or your company name Enter your Gradwell extension number in the User name and Authorization user name fields. Enter your extension password in the Password field. In the domain field, enter the registration server, this will be specified in the welcome email that you have received, and is usually sip.gradwell.net. You then need to ensure the Domain Proxy configuration section is setup as per our screenshot, this will ensure that X-Lite is able to work correctly in your network environment. Click on the Topology tab
Select Use local IP address at the top of the screen. Then click Apply followed by OK, these settings will be saved, and your softphone should register. You can now try calling 160, this is our number to test your setup. Listen to the recorded announcement on how to use this service. Advanced Configuration and TroubleshootingIf you are experiencing audio problems such as one way audio, X-Lite maybe trying to negogiate an incorrect codec. This can be resolved by selecting Options, Advanced, Audio Codecs and just ensuring that G711 uLaw is listed in the enabled codecs window Some versions of X-Lite may need the Codec Honor filter changing
