How to setup your Snom 300 VoIP phone
Getting started
NOTE To use a VoIP phone, you must have a router connected to an ADSL line. A USB modem will not work.
Unpack the phone and cables and plug them together as follows (easiest done with the phone base upside down):
- Connect the base unit and handset together using the curly phone cable; it plugs into the socket with the phone icon. If using a headset, plug it into the other socket underneath the base unit
- Connect the ethernet socket marked NET to one of the sockets on your router, using the coloured network cable. (Or if you have a hub or switch inboard of the router, use that.)
- If you don't have enough network sockets, you can connect a PC (for example) into the second socket.
- Connect and plug in the power cable.

Basic configuration
Switch the power on and leave the phone to initialise for a minute or two.
- If you have your network set up to hand out IP addresses (using DHCP), the phone will pick up an IP address and be ready for use. If not, see Setting an IP address
- If you bought your phone direct from us, it will already be configured for use with your first extension. If you bought it from somewhere else, see Configuring the phone.
- If you are using a headset, you can set it as the default audio device (rather than the handset) as described in Setting up a headset
Setting up a headset
Use the silver menu button to locate Information > IP address. Write it down temporarily for reference.
NOTE This step requires a PC on the same LAN/subnet as the phone.
Type the IP address into your browser like this: http://nnn.nnn.nnn.n nn (replace each nnn by as many digits as appear in the phone display, for example http://192.168.0.120), then use Enter. This shows you the phone's web configuration pages. Use the Setup > Preferences link at the left to choose your headset, and save the changes.
To answer a call: use the tick button to pick up the call on the headset (if any), pick up the handset, or press the Speaker button for hands-free operation.
To switch between two calls on line 1 and line 2: press either the L1 or L2 button to put one caller on hold and speak to the other. The active line is shown by a fast blinking light, the held one by a slow blink.
To make calls: enter the number using the keypad then pick up the handset to make a call; press the tick button to use the headset, or press the Speaker button to make a hands-free call.
- To dial an IP address, hold the hash key down to enter a dot
- To dial a SIP URL, press 1 then use the down-arrow on the menu navigation key to toggle between lower-case, capital letters and numbers, as indicated in the bottom right of the display. Use the left-arrow key to backspace and correct mistakes. Use the 1 key twice to get the @ character
To make attended transfers: put the caller on hold by pressing L1/L2 as appropriate. Dial the destination number as usual and speak to the recipient. Then press the Transfer and tick buttons to put the caller through and hang up your connection.
To make conference (three-way) calls: this requires changing the setup in the web configuration. If conference calls are important to you, it may be worth buying a higher-end Snom model which has dedicated conference buttons to join calls.
To pick up voicemails: dial *1 and enter the voicemail password when prompted (which you will find in the extension details in your VoIP control panel).

Advanced configuration and troubleshooting
Setting an IP address
(Only necessary if you do not use DHCP on your network.)
When the question "Do you use DHCP?" appears on the display, press the cancel button. (If this prompt doesn't appear, use the silver menu button to select Configuration > DHCP).
Follow the prompts to enter an IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS appropriate for your network. Use the numeric keypad, then the tick button to confirm the value.
TIP Once you've saved the IP address, you can use the web interface (Setup > Advanced link) to enter the other network settings. See Setting up a headset for how to start this.
Configuring the phone
(Only necessary for phones not purchased from Gradwell.)
- Find the IP address and start the phone’s web configuration page as noted in Setting up a headset.
- Click the Setup > Identity 1 link at the left, to see the Login tab
The important fields here are all provided in your welcome email or the control panel for the first (default) extension:
- Account (your first extension number); Password (your account password set in the Extensions control panel); Registrar (the SIP server name); Outbound Proxy (the SIP proxy server)
- Click Save and the phone will register with the Centrex service
